The learning path used to have seven modules. They led from the first right-hand notes to “Both hands together” and the pedal. It now has 27 modules with 157 exercises in total: 143 core exercises and 14 bonus exercises. The modules are numbered I to XXVII and go up to level 6.
Each module states its goal and ends with a target piece. Once you have played all core exercises in a module at score 80, the next one opens. Bonus exercises don’t count towards moving on. Modules up to your level are open from the start, so if your placement puts you at level 5, you can begin with the level 5 modules straight away.
Levels 1 and 2: both hands and time signatures
Three new modules bring in the left hand early. In “Both hands: first steps” it holds a note or a fifth while the right hand plays the tune. In “Both hands: simple accompaniment” it alternates root and fifth and plays a waltz bass. “Time signatures: 2/4 and 6/8” practises counting and playing in both.
Levels 3 and 4: keys, expression, technique
Eleven modules are new here:
- Keys: G, F and D major, reading the key signature and finding F sharp and B flat
- Dynamics and articulation: loud and soft, accented and short, as the score shows
- Ornaments: grace notes, upper and lower mordents, turns and trills
- Both hands: chords in the left hand while the right hand plays the tune
- Naming chords (major, minor, inversions) and Playing from chord symbols, up to accompanying a song from its tune and symbols
- Scales and thumb-under, Beyond the octave and Chords in motion for runs and broken triads
- Pedal: first steps and Sixteenth notes
Levels 5 and 6: tempo, chords, two voices
The six top modules are all new: Tempo and alla breve, Octaves and full chords, Keys up to four sharps and three flats, including minor keys, Left-hand accompaniment patterns with Alberti and leaping bass, Triplets and, as the only level 6 module, Two voices.
The repertoire stays alongside. The learning path offers an order in which to build the skills those pieces need. It does not replace your teacher’s view of what comes next.
