A new device or browser — the typical cases
Moving house, switching browsers, losing a device or passing it on — here are the five real-life situations where the question "how do my practice data come along?" comes up, each with the concrete route. The basis is always the same: without an account, everything lives on this one device only, and the backup file is the way to get it somewhere else.
A new tablet or laptop — the old device is still around
On the old device, make a backup: Settings → Data & Privacy → "↓ Back up" packs all profiles into a single file. Bring that file to the new device — a USB stick, the cloud, or simply an email to yourself — and there choose Settings → Data & Privacy → "↑ Restore". A dialog first shows honest numbers — how many entries, how many pieces, from which backup — and then replaces everything on the new device. In the end your full state is there, including your own pieces and sounds.
Only the browser changes — same computer
Switching, say, from Chrome to Edge on the same computer runs through the same file too: "↓ Back up" in the old browser, "↑ Restore" in the new one. The reason is easily overlooked: a profile lives per browser, not per computer — the data sit in that one browser's storage. A different browser on the same device therefore starts from scratch until you restore the backup.
Device lost or broken — and no backup
Honestly: without a backup the local practice data are then gone — there's no copy on a server left behind. If the device was part of a device sync you'd set up, that's different: a second paired device already carries the same practice state and is a real safety net. Only if you (via a class connection) voluntarily provided an email address does /wiederherstellen additionally bring back the class connection — but without sync or a backup, not your practice data and not your pieces. The lesson: make a backup now and then, especially after a big import session — or set up device sync if you use more than one device.

iPad AND laptop at the same time?
These days, honestly yes: device sync keeps the same practice state in step across your own paired devices — automatically at startup and after practising, or right away via "Sync now". Setting it up needs Klavissimo Plus, letting a second device join is free. Without sync set up, the old rule still applies: if you restore the same profile onto a second device by email, the first one is automatically logged out — reading along only (parents or a teacher) still works via the family or class connection.
iPad AND laptop at the same time?
In this app the rule is: if you restore the same profile onto a second device by email, the first one is automatically logged out — practising on two devices at the same time is not part of this app. Reading along only (parents or a teacher) still works via the family or class connection.
Lending or selling the device
Back up first, then delete — in that order. Via Settings → Data & Privacy → "Delete everything", the path first leads through a take-it-with-you view (pieces, history, the whole backup — all optional) and only then to deletion. That requires typing "DELETE" to confirm and afterwards removes everything from this device for good.
Your data:
As it says under the backup itself: "The file also contains your access data (e.g. class connection) — keep it safe." So moving the file over by email or cloud shares more than just practice results — best delete it from that intermediate storage afterwards.
